So, you’ve been to the doctor, had your sleep study, and have been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.  Now you have this new machine that you are trying to get used to wearing at night and you wonder when you will start sleeping better.  If you diligently wear your CPAP machine at night you will within weeks.  But guess what?  If you consistently wear your CPAP, not only will you be getting better sleep, but your body will be reaping so many other benefits.  You will be re energizing your body in no time and start to feel like a new person.  Ready for some stats?  Here we go…

A new study in the Jan. 1st issue of the journal Sleep provides objective evidence to support these anecdotal reports, showing that three weeks of CPAP therapy significantly reduced fatigue and increased energy in patients with OSA.

Another positive effect of using your CPAP machine is the knowledge that you are preventing these three main diseases: heart disease, stroke and diabetes.  Your blood pressure will rise when you do not take a breath because your O2 levels will fall and your brain will tell you blood vessels to tighten to increase the flow of oxygen to the heart and the brain.  If the pressure increases at night it will stay elevated during the day.  By using your CPAP you are reducing your risk of heart disease.  Apnea causes enormous strain on your heart.  Years of untreated sleep apnea increases your risk of heart disease.  Strokes are the sudden loss of brain function due to the lack of oxygen to your brain when you haven an apnea.  People with untreated apnea are 2 to 4 times more likely to have a stroke.  Use that CPAP!!

Another added benefit to your body is in the libido department.  Your hormones can get all out of balance with untreated sleep apnea.  Use that machine on a consistent basis, and your testosterone levels will start to regulate and get back within to normal limits.

Wondering what other positive effects using your CPAP regularly can have on your body?  Join Dr. John for the St. Christopher Minute on the Tim Ridley Show tomorrow morning at 6:30am EST on Sirius XM channel 146.
